I don't see what's wrong with payable content and the update or why you must call them failnet over it
They implemented what has been in demand for a long time, and added in a last-minute special holiday offer additionally.
It won't be giving you advantages, but it will grant something players just love:
Additional armor, in a way.
Maybe you might be calling it failnet, but so far it seems they've been incredibly successful. Their marketing says otherwise, as well as all the happy customers who've bought it so far
Plus 10$ is cheap. You can't really go lower than that for this. I mean *shudders* it could have been 19.99 USD... And I can clearly imagine that in my head :/

However things I would NOT want are:
[lots of subjective stuff]
|
So you people won't buy it. hey thats fine, but only because it's not worth it for you, it automatically is total rubbish for everyone...?
And the ppl qqing about it delaying the skill update. I highly doubt that artist and designers play a key part in the test krewes testing progress.
What about a little story:
You're playing billiard in a pub. You had to buy the queues once, so you're able to play. Now one day the pub owners offers a hat for, lets say 10 bucks. Now tell me, what is wrong about selling hats (which he or so. other had to put effort into making it) for those who want to look better while playing billiard?
Why would you want to blame seller or buyer?
because the look of the hat offends you?
Because he has sth. you don't?
Because you didn't get a hat for free'
C'mon this is rediculous

Expect more costumes to be buyable in the months to come. It's only logical for Anet to make more now the system is in place.

1. the grenth costume looks awesome...good job
2. no, paying extra money for a costume in a dying game makes no sense to me, but to players who have just started and plan to spend considerable time exploring the game, it just might make sense.
3. if i were an exec at ncsoft or anet i'd be crackin the whip on any revenue generating gimmick i could think of. i don't blame them

Oh my god I would love wings. Imagine having like Paragon wings or something. Oh lawd *faints*.
Lovin the Grenth, not so much the Dwayna at the moment. And even if it is just a way to get some money I'm fine with it, I hope every little bit helps.

Wasn't the knock on giving hero armor sets to players as craftable sets that they were designed as one piece or something like that? Theoretically, I wonder if hero armor sets could be more easily modified to work as 'costumes' than 'armors'?

They could have been awesome additions to the game if they were obtainable through ingame means like actual gameplay (quest rewards or something) or ingame currencies (craftables for gold/ton of candy shards or something). They could have been made part of the game, but instead this way they're just a sick joke. They may look cool but all they do is shout "hey everyone look I'm dumb enough to spend real $$ on a costume in a video game".

The gamedevs could learn something from you. Oh wait, there are no pure gamedevs left at Anet anymore, they're all marketeers.

I think this is fine and hope it's a premonition of things to come for GW2. It's purely cosmetic and people who want to pay for these things can do so without an unfair advantage. Anet has to make some money somehow, and in a F2P game like GW, vanity items are a good way to go about it.
@Yawgmoth: What's the difference in paying real money for an in-game costume and paying money for a video game? Or some cool shoes? Or earrings? You get something to show for your spent money, even if none of these things are essentials.

OK, GW is officially a microtransaction game now. "You wanna dress fancy looking costumes... pay!"
If it was at the border before, making it unclear as the items you bought had some technical meaning (change character name, etc) this update makes it official. They might as well start selling armor and item skins for real money, same thing.

Female Dwayna outfit looks pretty awesome though.

There are appearance slots in EQ2 and I like having it. I'd love to get the costume but I've already been hacked once right after using the store so I am pretty much afraid to try it.

when they want more money they'll spend a couple hours making some more. it's all worthless garbage, and yet another huge step in the wrong direction.
ffs at least have some actual content to pay for, not something that does the same thing as a tonic so we can all look like the same dumb goon or some silly twat.
i honestly don't care since i won't be buying them, but i am extremely discouraged because i know that gw2 will be all about microtransactions, thus making a game which i'm sure will be good into another dead shitfest.

So what's the difference in paying through ebay or the ingame store? The source. It's the same principle, but one source covered its ass with an eula so they could spread fear with account termination.
If one bought 2000k gold through ebay the first 6 months after release and bought FoW armor with it ingame, at least that person still had something 'unique' as few people had it back then.
I remember the QQ threads about these things, but now it's all ok it seems.
GW sold over 6 million copies, Anet is backed up by an mmo giant like NCsoft and GW2 will sell big time. Do you really think they're that poor. Anet isn't even a big company with around 185 people on the payroll, compared to Blizz with over 2500.
Squeeze moar!

They figured they can spend tons of time working on a new campaign that would end up with about the same price as the two stupid costumes (many places sell one of the 3 original campaigns at about $10)... or they could spend one week coming up with no new content whatsoever but charging the same amount of money.
Indeed, yet another huge step in the wrong direction. I'm starting to doubt the GW franchise. I want to play a free to play game, I don't want to play a micro-transactions based game. They are going away from their core/major marketing philosophy.
